FAQ
Can I run a mail or web server at the end of my ADSL line?
The short answer is Yes. All servers connected to the internet have a unique number called an IP address. This is necessary otherwise nobody would be able to find anything on the internet. For example, when you type in www.tcadsl.co.za, the internet converts this to the following number 66.8.85.41 and the internet knows the route to take to reach that server. This all happens in under a second. You may have heard that ADSL does not provide a fixed IP address. This is true and therefore would normally pose a problem in locating a server on the ADSL line. At ATC we have two solutions to overcome the normal limitations of ADSL.
Can I still use my modem on the ADSL phone line?
Yes. Just as you can continue to use the ADSL-enabled telephone line for normal voice conversations, you can also continue to use the ADSL-enabled telephone line for your 56K dialup modem. You can also use both your ADSL modem/router and telephone/dialup modem at the same time with no problems. Can I still use my ordinary analogue phone with my ADSL line?
Yes. When Telkom installs the ADSL line, request a POTS splitter. The POTS splitter connects to your ADSL line where it comes from the wall socket, and then has two separate ports, one for your analogue telephone, and one for your ADSL modem. How do I get an ADSL line?
In order to obtain ADSL connectivity to the Internet, you will require three separate components, namely
Contact Altech Technology Concepts. We will remove the hassle and frustration of dealing with Telkom from you. What hardware do I need to connect via ADSL?
The main piece of equipment that you will require to connect an ADSL line to your PC is an ADSL modem. These come in two main varieties namely a USB or Ethernet connection. Most modern PCs have USB ports, thus making it easy to connect a USB ADSL modem. Typically, USB modems are cheaper than Ethernet modems. The exact operating system and hardware requirements will depend on your modem selection and driver availability. Altech Technology Concepts recommends Netgear, Billion or Linksys modems. Certain modems include firewalls which is essential to secure your computers on the Internet. Some models have 4 Ethernet ports to allow other devices to connect as a switch / hub. Others allow for WiFi connectivity too. Contact Altech Techno-logy Concepts on 011-803-2169 for more information. What is a firewall? Do I need one?
A firewall protects your computer(s) from people on the Internet. If you are running a computer connected to the Internet via an ADSL modem, it is strongly recommended you have a firewall running on your computer. Note that many combination ADSL modem/router devices also include a hardware firewall. What is ADSL/ADSL2/ADSL2+?
ADSL ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line service. It is called asymmetric because the download and upload speeds are not symmetrical (download is faster than upload). ADSL2 ADSL2 (ITU G.992.3 and G.992.4) adds new features and functionality targeted at improving performance and interoperability and adds support for new applications and services. Among the changes are improvements in ADSLs data rate, an increase in the distance ADSL can reach from the local telephone exchange, dynamic data rate adaptation, better resistance to noise, diagnostics, and a stand-by mode to save power. ADSL2 also reduces the initialisation time from more than 10 seconds (as is required for ADSL) to less than 3 seconds. ADSL2 has the same signal footprint as ADSL. ADSL2+ ADSL2+ (ITU G.992.5) doubles the bandwidth used for downstream data transmission, effectively doubling the maximum downstream data rates, and achieving rates of 20 Mbps on telephone lines as long at 5,000 feet. ADSL2+ solutions will interoperate with ADSL and ADSL2, as well as with ADSL2+. ADSL2+ will include all the feature and performance benefits of ADSL2 while maintaining the capability to interoperate with legacy ADSL equipment. What service guarantees does ADSL offer?
ADSL is a "best effort" service and therefore is provided without any service guarantees. All complaints must be directed to Telkom. What SMTP (outgoing mail) server should I be using?
